Plenty of business owners are skeptical about podcasting. It can look like a lot of effort for an uncertain payoff — a hobby dressed up as marketing. That was my assumption too, right up until a podcast turned into one of the most valuable business development tools we had. Here is how starting a show grew our business, and how it can grow yours.
Starting the show
We launched our podcast while looking for ways to grow our digital footprint and connect with our community and potential clients. I had never actually listened to a podcast — I only knew they existed because they were on my phone and mentioned everywhere. That did not stop us from diving in. My business partner had more production experience, which meant I could focus on marketing the show while she focused on producing it. If you have never made a podcast, find a partner or a platform that lets you lean on your strengths and cover your gaps.
Letting it evolve
Even good ideas change. Our original concept was casual business talk between the two of us. A few months in, we started producing special episodes featuring other business owners and entrepreneurs. That single change transformed the show.
The interviews drove real traffic to our website, and we noticed our show name and cover art no longer reflected the image we wanted. So we rebranded: a simpler, clearer title and cover art that matched the rest of our marketing. The new look was more cohesive and, frankly, just better. If your show has drifted from its original concept, do not be afraid to rename and redesign around what is actually working.
Where the business growth came from
Here is the part that matters. If you run a business, you are always hunting for new leads and opportunities, and it is a never-ending grind. When we launched our interview series, it pushed our team out of our comfort zone and into the community. We were reaching out to people not to sell them anything, but to learn about them.
Almost by accident, we were building relationships with community members and business owners we likely never would have met otherwise. As those interviews went live, former guests started coming back to us — asking if we could build them a website, design a logo, define a marketing strategy, or help them launch a podcast of their own. The podcast put us in front of these people, helped us build genuine connections, and turned into unplanned sales opportunities.
Why a podcast is more than content
A podcast is a standing invitation to have conversations you would not otherwise have. Every guest is a relationship. Every episode is a reason to reach out to someone interesting. That relationship-building is worth far more than the download numbers alone suggest.
Podcasts have more value than most people assume — I certainly assumed less than they delivered. If you have been on the fence, treat your show as a networking engine as much as a media project. And if you would like help launching your own, MyPodOps Hosting and MyPodOps Studio give you everything you need to record, publish, and grow from a single place.
